Pet friendly holiday cottage, sleeps 5 - Dolgellau, Gwynedd

This detached single-storey cottage is set in idyllic grounds and has far-reaching views of the National Park. With three peaceful bedrooms and a homely, family feel throughout, it's a lovely base for a coast and countryside break with a couple of canine companions. The paddock makes a great play-space for children and pets, and there are lovely walks on the doorstep too.

Located within the grounds of the owner's property, this pretty stone cottage assures privacy and comfort for a party of five and their pets. The accommodation is all on one level here – open the front door and you'll find a characterful kitchen with all the modern must-haves alongside a feature original chimney breast. Step through to the lounge/diner where there's a deep-set porthole-style window onto the paddock, and a dining suite where you can enjoy meals and board games.

For laid-back nights in, switch on the flame-effect electric fire and watch a film on the TV/DVD while the dogs snooze at your feet. When it's time for bed, three slumbersome rooms beckon – one double, one twin and one single. Wake up refreshed, then kick-start your day with a shower.

Your living space is extended by a paved and enclosed gravel area to the front of property where you can enjoy sunshine and al fresco dining. Beyond, the long paddock is perfect for ball games and has fabulous views towards the mountains. Nearby Dolgellau is a thriving market town with shops, inns and eateries to suit every appetite.

Take the water taxi from Fairbourne beach to Barmouth's harbour, or stretch your legs and walk there along the 10-mile Mawddach Trail. The town is where the sea and mountains meet – it has a wealth of traditional resort attractions and you can catch a bus back to Dolgellau after your visit. Between these two locations, Penmaenpool (2.5 miles) is famed for its beautiful old toll-bridge and friendly inn.
