A little further afield – 27 miles – you’ll find Cheltenham, famed for its races, literature and music festival. Closer to home, why not cross the Halfpenny Bridge and stroll along the River Thames, where you’ll find a few traditional inns along the way, take a boat trip or visit one of the nearby National Trust centres such as Badbury – an ancient woodland with beech trees and carpets of bluebells in the spring (8 miles) or Buscot Park (6 miles) with its 18th-century house and landscaped gardens.
